After completing his secondary education in 1962, Mbotela began his journalism career in Nakuru as a trainee reporter with The Standard newspaper. In 1964, he joined Voice of Kenya, now Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC). In 1966, he created his iconic program Je Huu ni Ungwana?, which remains one of the longest-running radio programs in Kenya.

In 1967, he trained at the BBC in London for one year to further his journalism skills. In 1982, during the attempted coup against President Daniel Arap Moi, Mbotela was forced by coup plotters to announce on live television that the government had been overthrown. 

After the coup was suppressed by the General Service Unit and police forces led by Major General Mahamoud Mohamed, he was later made to announce that the government had regained control. He retired in 2022 as Kenya’s longest-serving broadcaster, with a career spanning 58 years on air.

Leonard Mambo Mbotela's Illness and Death|Cause of Death

Mbotela had faced health challenges and was hospitalized several times before his passing. In 2020, he was admitted to Nairobi South Hospital for two weeks and publicly sought help for medical bills, which were partially covered after then-President Uhuru Kenyatta contributed Ksh 1.1 million. He passed away on February 7, 2025, at Nairobi West Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for two weeks before his death.
