Williams began his career at a young age in London’s West End, starring in Billy Elliot the Musical and later appearing as Young Michael Jackson in Thriller Live. As an adult, he performed in productions such as Rent and Everybody's Talking About Jamie.
On television, he is well known for his role in Beautiful People (2008–2009) and as Stephen Carmichael in Bad Education (2012–2014, 2022–2024). He also appeared in School for Stars.
Layton later toured with Matthew Bourne’s The Car Man and performed as Duane in Hairspray the Musical. He gained major recognition starring as Jamie in Everybody's Talking About Jamie in London’s West End and on tour, including performances in Los Angeles.
In 2023, he appeared as a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing, partnered with Nikita Kuzmin. They achieved multiple perfect scores and finished as joint runners-up.
From June to September 2024, he played the Emcee in Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, opposite Rhea Norwood. He later originated the role of Iceberg in the West End premiere of Titanique at the Criterion Theatre, earning critical acclaim and a Laurence Olivier Award.
