He has also portrayed William Herrick in Being Human, appeared in Line of Duty, played Prime Minister Harold Wilson in The Crown, and starred as Detective Sergeant Dodds in McDonald & Dodds.
After graduating from RADA, Watkins established himself as a stage actor and joined the National Theatre company. He was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Theatre Award and won Best Supporting Actor for his performance in A Servant for Two Masters at the Young Vic, later transferred to the New Ambassadors Theatre.
